As a qualified entomologist (a scientist who specialises in the study of insects) Christian Schweizer founded expovivo in 1988. Since 1998 the company, located near Basel, Switzerland, has been a public limited company.

The founder of expovivo is owner of many thousands of animals. He and his staff keep and breed them successfully in large, appropriate housing. The company has become expert in planning, designing and building the show cases, aquariums and terrariums for the touring exhibitions. At all show locations specialised staff care for the animals throughout the duration of the exhibition.

The expovivo-Shows aim to support a harmonic relationship between human beings and animals. The key inspiration behind the exhibitions is the promotion of animal conservation. Making visitors more familiar with the animals, it is hoped that this will motivate them to become involved in the conservation of the creatures and their biotope. At the same time Christian Schweizer wants to engender more responsibility in those who already keep animals as pets.
